'Other girls' on tour are a threat, tennis mom says

by John Graves

Bi-racial teenage Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson made headlines recently when it was revealed that basketball legend Julius Irving was Alexandra's biological father. What you may not have read about was that Alexandra's mother, Samantha Stevenson, suggested not too kindly that women's tennis was dominated by lesbians.

According to a report in the July 19 issue of People magazine, Samantha Stevenson told the British press, "The biggest threat to girls her age are other girls on the tour."

now," Bullock said. "When I got busted for drugs. I had to say to myself, 'Jim, this is your wake-up call-enough!' And that's all it took to get me back on track. I avoided jail time and checked into an outpatient rehab program and I got my life back."

Most recently, Bullock has been performing, in drag, to full houses as star of the Los Angeles stage musical Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly. "I got my life and career back!" he added.

Here's a Pride-month program I almost forgot: Comic Gary Marshall took an indepth look at the debate over same-sex marriage in Hawaii on one of the first programs he hosted on his new Showtime documentary mini-series, Marriage in the Twentieth Century.

The program included a look at the samesex couples who took that first, critical step in demanding their rights to be married under Hawaiian law, and last year's heated debate and election over a state constitutional amend-

Skye told Stern that she was introduced to her first female lover by none other than openly lesbian model and actress Jenny Shimizu.

The measure passed, but the issue isn't dead in Hawaii: Lawmakers did not actually pass a ban, and the state supreme court has yet to make a final ruling on the couples' sixyear-old case.

The good reviews and box office success of both films seems to prove the doubters were wrong, but Everett has reservations about being identified as "the gay actor."

"I'm very happy to be at the forefront of something, and I'm not shying away from anything," Everett told Entertainment News Wire correspondent Joshua Mooney. "But I'm an actor-not a politician."

Everett told People magazine, "My being out is not about anything for me other than I can't bother to be in."

On being a sex symbol for both men and women, Everett added, "Frankly, it's exhausting. I need a lot of sleep."

Places to go, and places to avoid

If you are still making plans for your summer vacation, you might want to pick up a copy of the July 20 “Gay Travel" edition of the Advocate. The magazine takes in-depth look at recent homophobic opposition to lesbigay tour groups in the Caribbean. They include a review of international destinations where the lesbigay tourist should exercise caution, a report on which countries which are making a special effort to attract lesbigay tourists, and an update on the traditional lesgibly vacation hotspots in the U.S.

Ellen's brother was her inspiration

People reports that Vance DeGeneres, Ellen's straight brother, has joined Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Commenting on the historic coming-out season of his sister and her sitcom character, Vance said, "I had such mixed emotions. It was really rough to see people criticize her." Vance was one of the Ellen show's writers.

When they were teenagers, Vance was a guitarist in a local band who became the heartthrob of girls in their hometown of New Orleans. Ellen said this was her inspiration to get into show business, saying, “Everybody knew who he was. That's what motivated me to do something, because I watched him get all this attention and glory."

Vance, who has not been the center of public attention since those local band days, indicated that he was not jealous of his sister's rise to fame.

"Ellen is a gifted comedian, but I'm not aspiring to get that high. I'm really very happy where I am."

Farewell to Allan Carr

The July 19 issue of People also pays tribute to gay producer Allen Carr, who died of liver cancer in June. Carr was most famous for his production of the film version of Grease and the Broadway musical production of the gay classic La Cage aux Folles. ✓
